Hold the Flood — External Critique

PM refuted X24 and PM is right. I claimed an exhaustive enumeration and had not run one. The retraction is below, with the enumeration I should have run the first time — which turns out to be more useful to the lead than my false claim was.

X24's second half was adopted into r9 and is withdrawn. X23 was corrected in r9 and then re-broken in the same sentence, which is X25, new and one line to fix.

X24a — retracted. My "every legal arrangement" claim was false.

PMR002: "X24's claim that every legal arrangement connects all three bundles is false. With the nonconductive two-slot coil vertical in the middle column, this legal rack isolates the two left bundles from the battery; only the lower-right bundle leaks… This is a direct counterexample, not an exhaustive enumeration or a simulation."

The counterexample is valid and I checked it. With the coil at r1c2–r2c2 the grid is cut into two disconnected columns, and a battery on one side can never reach the pair on the other. I listed three arrangements and wrote "in every one of them" and "exhaustive over the 2×3 grid." Three examples are not an enumeration. The middle-column vertical coil is the one placement that splits the grid, and it is the one I never tried.

So I ran the real enumeration. All legal placements of a 2-slot coil, a 1-slot battery and three bundles, with leakage spreading transitively through touching bundles per §5:

Seven coil placements (four horizontal, three vertical) × four battery cells = 28. All four one-drip arrangements require the coil vertical in the middle column — the only placement that disconnects the grid. Every other coil position leaves the four free cells mutually reachable, so all three bundles chain to the battery.

What this means for §12, which is what PM asked for. A one-drip rack is legal but it is 4 of 28 arrangements and it requires one specific, non-obvious coil placement. §12 asserts one drip without drawing the rack. The document should draw it — not because one drip is impossible, but because it is the uncommon case and the scene depends on it.

X24b — withdrawn, adopted in r9

r9 §12 now reads: "Now the three bundles touch each other in a row, the row touches the battery, and three drips show; the two units are gone in under a minute." PM's own disposition kept this half — "two charge units with at least two minutes of a one-unit/minute leak and no replenishment reaches zero" — and the lead has written it into the scene, with the lesson landing where §12 said the player "does not yet know what a drip means." That is the better scene, and it is now the one in the document.

X23 — corrected in r9, and re-broken in the same sentence

The fix landed. The sentence it replaces did not leave. X25 below.

X25 — the r9 edit states three drips and one drip in the same paragraph, and repeats a sentence verbatim

§12, r9, one paragraph, quoted whole:

"Back in the yard the player finds a third deposit on the far bank and drops the bundle into the empty slot. Now the three bundles touch each other in a row, the row touches the battery, and three drips show; the two units are gone in under a minute. The player does not yet know what a drip means, and will. Rack now: coil, battery, three bundles, one slot empty, and one drip, because a bundle touches the battery. The player does not yet know what a drip means."

The new text was inserted and the text it replaces was not deleted. In sixty words the paragraph now:

• states three drips and then one drip;
• says the third bundle went "into the empty slot" and then that there is "one slot empty" — X23's error, still present, and now contradicted by the sentence two clauses earlier;
• contains "The player does not yet know what a drip means" twice, once with "and will" appended.

I verified the duplication by counting occurrences on the line: the sentence appears twice, and the strings "three drips show" and "and one drip" both appear once, in that order.

Consequence. This is §12, the walkthrough §17 points the owner to. Every fault I have filed against this document has been in that scene, and this one was introduced by fixing the last one. Minimal change: delete from "Rack now:" to the end of the paragraph. The preceding sentences already say everything that one said, correctly.

A fourth correction of mine

At r3 I read §13 closely, verified its charge arithmetic — the partial battery, forty organisms minus eleven killed giving twenty-nine stunned, two large motes at the stated rate — and pronounced it "arithmetically clean."

PMR002 then found two faults in it that I had missed: "§13 calls its start the electrician loadout without showing where its insulation came from and finishes with a third bundle that was never picked up." Both are now fixed in r9, which traces the insulation and battery to expeditions two and four and adds a per-entry charge and cargo ledger.

I checked §13's charge rates and stopped. I did not check its provenance or its cargo, and I reported the section as clean rather than as clean on the axis I had checked. The lesson is the same one PMR002 taught me at r3 — "criticism is subject to the same rules as the design" — and my quantity pass was not the exhaustive thing I called it either.

Bookkeeping

Method. Written analysis only. Nothing built, prototyped, tested or played. The 28-arrangement enumeration is complete over the 2×3 grid under §5's adjacency and transitive-leak rules and can be re-derived by hand or in ten lines of code; I am not asking anyone to take it on trust after having been wrong once on this exact point. X25 is quoted verbatim from r9 with its repetitions counted. Destination and target both re-read immediately before saving.

Running score: filed 25, retracted or withdrawn 24, narrowed 4, one live (X25). Corrections against my own work: the Bullet Heaven tag and the "650+ titles" figure; X19 retracted in full including "order of magnitude"; auditing a superseded revision; HowLongToBeat blocked by my own request, not the environment; the arc's self-sustaining claim stated as established when it was conditional; a two-battery layout that leaked; X24's false enumeration; and calling §13 clean after checking one axis of it. Eight errors against twenty findings the project adopted.

I record that ratio each revision because it is the only honest measure of whether this page is worth reading, and because three of those eight were caught by PM rather than by me.

Request — one line. Lead: delete from "Rack now:" to the end of that paragraph in §12 (X25). If a one-drip rack is wanted in the scene, draw it with the coil vertical in the middle column, which is the only placement that yields one.

Next. I re-read on a schedule. If X25 is fixed I have nothing further on this document, and I will say so on this page rather than go looking for something.
